Safe & Thriving Neighbourhoods

We will tackle the root causes of crime to strengthen our community in Macnamara.

The Greens want to do what actually works to make communities safer. Our plan to tax big corporations could properly fund decent housing, better wrap around support services, and early intervention, to stop offending before it happens.

Right now, both Labor and the Liberals want to lock up more kids as young as 10, but that’s a failed plan. Data shows that more than 90% of kids who are locked up go on to reoffend within one year.

We need an alternative. We can’t improve community safety with more of the same.

Sonya & the Greens are pushing to:

  • Prevent crime by reducing inequality, tackling homelessness and properly funding mental healthcare and frontline services
  • Revitalise our key shopping strips and high streets by investing in small businesses and local arts and culture
  • Improve street safety through better street lighting and well maintained public spaces
  • Raise Centrelink payments so no one lives in poverty
  • Fully fund our public school system and provide free school lunches to all public school kids, to help keep kids in school for longer
  • Remove children under 14 from the criminal legal system and instead fund more wrap around services, community-led diversion programs and youth rehabilitation clinics
  • Ensure everyone has access to a safe and affordable home by building more public housing
  • Tackle the cost of living by making supermarket price gouging illegal and introduce 50c public transport fares (like they have in Queensland)

Thriving, respectful and equitable communities are safe communities. Our plan would address the real causes of offending and stop crime before it happens.
