One person told me their last rent increase was 30%! No surprise half their building just couldn’t afford to stay in their homes anymore, and had to move out.
This can’t go on. Moving house is disruptive, exhausting and expensive. It makes neighbourhoods transient and destroys community.
That’s why the Greens are pushing to scrap the tax handouts that prevent renters buying their own homes, and build 360,000 high-quality homes to be sold and rented for below market prices.
In a country as rich as ours, everyone should have a secure, affordable home.
